The story of the
Airdale1524 Professional Imaging Logo!
Like all good brands, companies, and sophisticated organizations, I needed a
simple logo to represent Airdale1524 Professional Imaging.  Well, that...and a
publisher ran off with one of my downloadable photos, using it in a book with out my
permission.
Now, to be fair, this company mistakenly credited the photo as an "Official
U.S. Navy Photo" with my name as the photographer.  They obviously did not
realize it was an image
*I* actually owned, and not the U.S. Navy.  There are a lot
of images on here that I've shot in my capacity as a Navy photographer, so I
believe this was a simply a case of their fact-checkers not doing good research.
I realized I needed to emboss all the imagery I personally own to protect
myself from research errors such as this one (not to mention outright criminal theft
of my work).  "Airdale1524 Professional Imaging" was my first idea...but it's kinda
long.  So, over Labor Day Weekend, 2007, I designed the Airdale1524 logo.  Made
up of three elements, it's symbology is explained below:
The Camera Iris. An integral part of the
camera, the stylized open iris symbolizes
the visual nature of the work I do.  The
iris is the foundation of the logo because,
despite all my talents and skill sets, I will
always be a photographer first.
The letter "A". Short for "Airdale", the
capital "A" is rendered in a font type
that is similar to that used by most
newspapers.  This is because I am also a
reporter; I write news and feature
stories.
The number 1524. There is...a story to
this four-digit number.  One day I will
reveal it to the world. Until then, the
bold red numerals top out the logo.  (Oh,
yes--one note.  Just for the record, I
do
not use "1524" on any PINs or other
personal numbers.)
The logo.  Simple and symbolic.  The shape of the combined elements is a
bit of an homage to the command patch of Star Gate Command in the TV series
"Stargate SG-1".  Science-fiction, such as "Stargate SG-1," "Star Trek," and
"Babylon 5" capture the spirit of travel to unknown places and adventure that I
find in life in the U.S. Navy.
Also...well, I'll be honest.  Beneath all the profound symbolism in this
logo, there is one underlying factor that makes it what it is:  I just think this
design looks way cool!
