17 April 2004 -The Great Barrier Reef & Cairns-
|
The Great Barrier Reef is big enough to be seen from space. It is a gigantic coral reef stretching for thousands of miles along Australia's
eastern coastline. It is one of Australia's great attractions. There are many, many places you can head out for it.
Mike and I (above) did our first day out
on the Reef Quest. The weather was
crappy, rainy, choppy, and cold. But,
hey, how often do you get to snorkel the
Great Barrier Reef?
Even in the limited light of the day, the
reef was a colorful world of coral,
clams, fish, and Michael's taking
pictures of me taking pictures of him
(right). When you go on one of these
boats, you do not have to bring any
gear; the boat will provide everything.
Despite the fact that to me, who lives on Guam, the water was freezing,
we had a good time snorkeling for about 45 minutes. After that, I was
waaaaaay too cold, and ended up snoozing on the boat and enjoying the
afternoon.
Mike, however, hails from
Connecticut, and also ranks far
higher on the Stud-Muffin scale than
I do. In that spirit, he took to the
water again and spent about an hour
diving. The rat even got to see a
shark! All I got to see were blurry
fish (note to self: next time rent a
prescription mask!!!).
