| USS FORRESTAL CV 59 -Forrestal Class- Decommissioned Sep, 1993 These images were shot five years before I enlisted in the U.S. Navy. These were taken on the occaision of the Forrestal's arrival at Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL, to take over as training carrier from the USS Lexington (AVT 16). Briefly the Forrestal held the hull designation "AVT 59". However, midway though an overhaul in 1993, the Navy decided to retire the ship. After dredging Pensacola Bay to accomodate the massive vessel, renovating Allegheny Pier at the NAS, and moving all the Forrestal families to the Pensacola area, this decommissioning was suppose to save money. Go figure. |
